The Representation Of Bondage Dominance Sadism Masochism (BDSM) In The Film Fifty Shades Of Grey (2015)

Background: The BDSM phenomenon (Bondage and Discipline, Dominance and Submission, Sadism and Masochism) in Indonesia, as can be seen in the private television program "Sexophone" and the existence of the BDSM community, apparently is not represented by the number of BDSM-themed film in the society. Such conditions are reinforced by the lack of understanding and knowledge of the public regarding BDSM sexual behavior, which is accompanied by restrictions from the authorities.

Aim:  Therefore this study aims to analyze the representation of BDSM which is associated with the film Fifty Shades of Grey (2015).

Method: This study uses qualitative methods on descriptive research. On the other hand, this study was also strengthened by John Fiske's semiotic analysis theory in order to provide an overview of the signs in the film Fifty Shades of Grey.

Result: This research shows that BDSM's depiction of Fifty Shade of Grey consists of bondage, discipline, dominance and submission, in which the level of reality, representation and ideology are expressed. BDSM relationship delivered on Fifty Shade of Grey not only emphasizes the sexual elements, but there are also power relations and the masculinity side that is illustrated.

Conclusion: It can be concluded that the BDSM presented in the film Fifty Shades of Grey has become a 'space' for filmmakers to convey the current social conditions. The sexual elements are packaged so that they can be used as discussion material by the audience.
