Orphanages: A bane to personality development of the child

  • Akpotor, Julie PhD

This paper reviewed orphanage homes as a bane to the personality development of the child. That
the way an individual is perceived and rated by others also depends on the self-worth he has
deposited in the minds of others. Ordinarily, child development should bring out the personality,
but most orphanage homes appear to be more destructive than developmental. Hence the paper
raised these challenges and brought to the fore the need to address these developmental challenges.
The revelations were that orphanage development affects the psychology of the child and also most
children end up with low self-esteem and depression due to long periods of denials. The paper
recommended that caregivers in orphanage homes should adopt developmental strategies that are
systematic, inclusive and progressive as a panacea to improved personality development.
