The Effect of Proposed Active Learning-Based Portfolio in Communication Skills Course on Academic Self Efficacy and Increased Achievement Level among Preparatory-Level Students at Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to identify the effect of proposed active learning-based
portfolio in communication skills course on academic self-effectiveness and increased
achievement level among preparatory-level students and Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal
University. The sample was intentionally selected from preparatory-level students and consisted
of four classrooms, two for males and two for female students. The ninety students in the four
classrooms were assigned to control and experimental groups. The study instrument consisted of
28-item self-efficacy scale with each of the four domains: academic, social, emotional, and
planning domains are measured by seven items; the 20-item achievement test, and the proposed
instructional module. The study found a statistically significant difference in academic selfefficacy
among Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University’s preparatory-level students in the
communication skills course attributed to the instructional module in favor of the experimental
group. However, there were no statistically significant differences attributed to gender or
interaction between the instructional module and gender. A statistically significant difference was
found in student achievement attributed to the instructional module in favor of the experimental
group and in gender in favor of female students. Whereas there was no statistically significant
difference in achievement attributed to interaction between the instructional module and gender.
